For over a decade, LEOT has been a cornerstone of educational empowerment in Northern Laos. Since opening its doors in 2012, the school has provided free education to over 3,000 disadvantaged students aged 16 and older. By focusing on those who have missed out on mainstream schooling or need additional skills to enter the workforce, LEOT has bridged the gap between rural poverty and professional opportunity.
Achievements in Recent Years
- Expansion of the School Network: LEOT’s community building program has reached an incredible milestone. They are currently completing their 16th rural primary school in Jok Village, with plans already underway to build four more and repair five others. This ensures that the next generation of students has a safe, modern environment to begin their journey.
- Vocational Success: Despite the recent closure of the government-partnered sewing school, LEOT has successfully trained hundreds of women since 2018, with 90% of graduates either finding professional work or starting their own home-based micro-businesses.
- Adapting to Modern Demand: Recognizing the changing needs of the Lao workforce, LEOT has shifted its focus from daytime classes to evening and weekend courses. This allows students who are working or attending government school during the day to gain critical English and IT skills in their spare time.
Current Programs: Building Careers and Character
LEOT’s current curriculum is designed to be highly practical, ensuring students are “job-ready” for the thriving tourism and tech sectors in Luang Prabang.
1. The Dream Catcher Program This flagship career development course is for final-year high school students and recent graduates. It goes beyond the classroom, taking students on immersive visits to local businesses (like the Tiger Trail tourism office) to see professional pathways in action. It teaches CV writing, interview techniques, and goal setting—turning dreams into tangible career plans.
2. Hospitality English With Luang Prabang being a UNESCO World Heritage site, tourism is the lifeblood of the local economy. This program provides students with the specialized vocabulary and service skills needed to work in high-end hotels and restaurants, immediately increasing their earning potential.
3. Digital Literacy & IT In an increasingly digital world, LEOT ensures no student is left behind. Their IT courses cover everything from basic computer operation to advanced software use, giving disadvantaged students the same digital advantages as their urban peers. 4. Environmental Awareness & The Arts Education at LEOT is holistic. The “Green Activities” initiative teaches students about recycling and environmental stewardship, while the school’s recurring Art Exhibitions at the French Institute allow students to showcase and sell their photography and paintings, fostering both creative expression and entrepreneurial skills.
Looking Ahead: The 2026 Vision
As LEOT moves forward, the focus remains on sustainable support. With 250 students currently enrolled and new courses starting every autumn, the trust continues to prove that when you give a young person the tools to learn, they have the power to change their entire community.
