Google has launched Google File Stream to GSuite customers allowing them to sync Team Drives and access files on demand without having to sync all files offline. Google Drive desktop software will no longer be supported beginning on December 11th, 2017, and it will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018, Google says.
Google debuted File Stream on March 9, 2017. The service allows users to stream Drive files directly to their computer without being stored locally. So, in lieu of using Drive for Mac/PC, Google is encouraging users to utilise Drive File Stream instead,
You can choose to install the consumer tool, Backup and Sync, either as an alternative to Google Drive or in addition to the Drive File Stream enterprise software.
Backup and Sync doesn’t support Google’s collaborative Team Drives, but it can be used along with Drive File Stream to sync other folders with Drive, like Documents and Desktop.
