Have you seen what’s happening with this Chinese AI startup? DeepSeek has burst onto the scene and caused quite a stir in the tech world!
The company recently launched their DeepSeek R1 model, which they claim matches OpenAI’s capabilities but at a fraction of the cost. It’s become so popular that it topped Apple’s App Store charts, and even caused Nvidia’s stock to plummet – wiping billions off their value!
President Trump called it a “wake-up call” for American tech firms, who’ve assumed they’d dominate the AI market.
DeepSeek works similarly to ChatGPT, helping with everyday tasks like writing emails and answering questions. Their founder, Liang Wenfeng, reportedly stockpiled Nvidia chips before export bans and created a more efficient system by combining them with cheaper alternatives.
Worth noting that Australia has banned DeepSeek on government devices over security concerns, and Italy has blocked the app entirely due to data protection worries (they store data on Chinese servers).
Interesting how this has shaken confidence in the idea that only massive budgets can advance AI technology. Chinese state media are celebrating it as proof of their growing tech independence, while Silicon Valley giants are feeling rather nervous!
What do you make of all this? Would you trust an AI app from China?
